Chinese in Kazakhstan spent billions on bribes
For 16 years, from 2004 to 2020, the Chinese company Tukha paid billions of dollars to Kazakh officials.
This was revealed during a trial in Aktobe. Two company employees – a deputy director and an accountant – were convicted of cashing out the money. The women admitted that they did so on the instructions of their Chinese bosses to bribe officials.
It turns out that Tukha, a company operating in the oil and gas sector, paid monthly “tribute” in dollars to the Aktobe regional administration and labor department; the migration service received $2.4 million; the ecology department received $20,000 per year; and a $500,000 bribe to customs for reduced duties.
Against this backdrop, the bribe to the Aktobe Regional Prosecutor’s Office — a mere $100,000 — seems “modest.”
