Former Head of the Department of Ecology for Zhambyl Region T. Smagulov was found guilty of accepting a bribe by the Taraz City Court. The court also found the Deputy General Director of Taraz Metallurgical Plant LLP B. Polatbekov and the ecologist of this enterprise M. Asan guilty of giving a bribe.
The press service of the Anti-Corruption Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan reported this on June 12.
The court found that representatives of the Taraz Metallurgical Plant bribed the chief regional ecologist so that he would provide an opportunity to eliminate the shortcomings identified during the environmental audit without any sanctions for the enterprise, as well as for “general patronage”.
Smagulov, Polatbekov and Asan were sentenced to fines totaling 24 million tenge.
Also, according to the court decision, they are permanently deprived of the right to hold positions in the civil service and in quasi-public sector entities.
