On January 23, 2024, an earthquake occurred in Almaty. However, the early warning system for the population – for which 1.1 billion tenge was allocated from the budget in 2022 – did not work.
The contract was concluded with TNS-INTEC LLP, but the system never became operational. The Almaty Prosecutor’s Office proved in court that the company’s management embezzled budget funds by purchasing substandard equipment at inflated prices.
The general director of the LLP, three deputy heads of the Department of Emergency Situations, and representatives of the design and technical supervision teams were convicted.
