Bakytgul Khamenova, a former member of the Kazakh Parliament (Mazhilis), was spotted at a wedding in Atyrau. This caused outrage among Kazakh citizens on social media, as Khamenova was sentenced to 7 years in prison in 2022 for accepting a bribe of 4.5 million tenge.
The court explained that the convicted woman has a suspended sentence due to having minor children. She will begin serving her sentence in February 2026.
Bakytgul Khamenova became known for her “North Korean-style” praise of the first president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev. She also proposed enshrining Nazarbayev’s merits in the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
