Kazakh public activist Sanzhar Bokaev, who earlier revealed how brand-new paving stones in Almaty were being replaced with new ones again — a case of wasteful spending even mentioned by President Tokayev in his annual address to parliament — has released a new investigation.
This time, Bokaev focuses on the Big Almaty Canal, where billions of tenge have been allocated to replace durable Soviet-era concrete, still in good condition, with locally produced concrete of questionable quality. According to him, the works are also being carried out in violation of construction standards.
