From 2012 to 2021, December 1st was celebrated as a national holiday – Day of the First President of Kazakhstan.
Wikipedia states that this holiday was “established in recognition of the achievements of the first president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, in developing an independent state, ensuring the unity of Kazakhstan, and protecting the constitution and human and civil rights and freedoms.”
Political scientist Dosym Satpayev believes that autocratic regimes are masters at creating political mythologies. Such a mythology was precisely created around Nazarbayev.
D. Satpayev notes that many of those who supported and promoted Nazarbayev’s personality cult still remain in power.
