Oligarchs and high-ranking officials of old Kazakhstan illegally acquired vast plots of land in Konayev, on the shores of the Kapchagay Reservoir.
An investigation initiated by Majilis Deputy Bakytzhan Bazarbek revealed that 57 plots of land on the banks of the Kapchagay Reservoir were owned by oligarchs such as the Kulibayevs, several former prime ministers of Kazakhstan, and the children of former akims (mayors).
Interestingly, the offspring of one former akim somehow became the owner of a plot of land larger than the entire city of Konayev.
