For example, consider two settlements located across from each other: the Kazakh village of Bakhty and the Chinese city of Chuguchak.
On one side — broken roads, holes in the ground instead of toilets, and 2,500 residents without jobs, money, or hope for a normal life. On the other — a new, modern, fast-developing metropolis with 158,000 residents.
And yet, only 35 years ago, Chuguchak was, even compared to Bakhty, a true backwater. Peasants lived in mud-brick houses and barely made ends meet.
